Hamsters On The BIG Screen

Now I am quite a big telly fan. I catch-up all the shows I miss in the wee as well as re-watch whole series of those awesome american shows (supernatural and heroes to name just 2).

Netflix is a pretty great thing. I am not just shamelessly plugging this TV service for the fat its got lots of things I like to watch on it…
The advert is just my cup of tea.
And when I see a decent advert, in between all them awful repetitive ones, I like to not them down.

Netflix, you have done me proud. Hamsters being their TV mascot almost is a very clever thing. You have me on board guys! You had me at the whiskers!

If you havent seen this, just give it a quick watch. Not for the Netflix ad itself, but for the SUPER cute hamsters that star in it.

Enjoy the TV cuteness…

P.S. the black and white banded hamster in this ad is just ADORABLE!!!

Winter Blues

There is absolutely nothing worse than waking up on a cold morning, while its still dark outside and you can hear the rain on the window and you have to get out of your warm, comfortable bed. Nothing worse!

Casper knows what I’m talking about!

At least he can climb back in bed. Into his toasty little cubby-hole.
I can’t.
*jealous eyes flicking your way Cas*

They say that turning on a light helps you to wake up. They say putting on the radio helps. They even say putting your alarm on the opposite side of the room helps you motivate yourself to get up.
Well let me tell you, NOTHING can motivate me to leave my warm bed on a cold morning.
The best I can do is a sugary cup of tea (kindly plonked on my bedside by my mumma) and some fast-paced music. A quick-tempo’d playlist really does get me moving but damn, what I would give to be a hamster.

Lay in all day, have a whole plate of food a few metres away for munching, and a wheel to run on when I felt like.
And then Casper can go to work. HAHAHA now that I’d like to see!

‘Simply Nibbles: Little Hearts’ Review

More treats?!
MORE treats?!!!

How spoilt are these hammy’s?! Seriously.

When walking round Morrison’s Supermarket, I am never actually impressed with their small pet section. The shelf consists of an exercise ball (that hasn’t been touched in at least 3 months – honest!), some sawdust and a rack of bottles. The treat selection is limited to say the least with just a small bag of chocolate drops. One choice of treats Morrison’s, ahh come onnnnn!!!

Well clearly they too thought this when looking at their pet section. Because when I was there in the week, I noticed a few more bits and pieces had been added to the shelf. A few different types of treats and chew-sticks! Round of applause for the supermarket!

The one I decided to go for and try out:
‘Simply Nibbles: Little Hearts”

The packet itself is quite large, holding a generous portion of these pink, green and cream heart shaped treats.
The hearts are paw-sized. So lots smaller than them apple strudel biscuits from the other week, but still large enough to be a good chompful for the hamsters!

These treats are actually a very good price at £1.19

So rather a good stocking filler for your hamster if you are into that kind of thing!
(Don’t worry I have a December post for this hamster stocking fillers thing for you all to look forward to)

Anyway back to the hearty nibbles. All three hamsters wasted no time in pouching these bad boys! Gone within the blink of an eye!

Dexter stuffed them straight in his pouch and then just moments later I could hear some very noisy nibblings going on from the belly of his bed! CHEEKY!

Eve sniffed them for a second, then sniffed my fingers – suspicious woman! But she did take a tedious bite from them and then proceed to stuff the remaining bit in her cheek. Didn’t want to miss out me giving her more!

Casper had a very different approach. He ate them one by one. I gave him a green one to start with and delicately crunched through it. Polished the whole heart off before sniffing my hand for another one. Oh alright then fatty!!

They are quite noisy treats; they pack a crunch thats for sure but this makes them oh so fabulous for their teeth as they always need a good crunch to wear them down. And to add to all this, they are 100% natural ingredients so I know they are all good for my hamsters bellys so can have 2 or 3 in one sitting. I feel like I am spoiling them rotten but they love it! And its coming up to Christmas after all! They deserve a bit of loving!! Ok, so they deserve a LOT of loving! 😀

They might need a air-tight tub or box to be kept in though becuase once that bag is open there is not way of shutting it! 😛

So the positives; affordable at £1.19, dainty sized, colourful, plentiful, 100% natural and very tasty!
Negatives: Just the awkward packaging making it difficult to reseal for freshness.

These are definitely a tasty winner! And so handy when you just want to treat your little furry! 😀

Available from Morrisons.

Always Eat Your Greens

The weekend before last, I was terribly unorganised and where I would plan all weekday posts so that I could just publish them on the day, I did none! So all of the last week was a nightmare of rushing posts and not even proof-reading anything before clicking publish! Very unlike moi!

So this week I have changed my ways! I have planned and written all my weekday posts so that nothing is left until the last minute. The blog survives another week ;D

Yesterday, Dexter, Casper and Eve were all treated to a stalk of broccoli. They LOVEEEEE their healthy veggies! Especially the broccoli!

I put the stalk in my lap and got them out one by one to enjoy their tasty treat.

I didnt really think this through because it made a hell of a mess all in my lap!
All the floret bits tumbled away from their tiny paws and I swear there was more still on my jeans than in their pouches!!!

At least they are getting that bit of variety and nutrition.
Even if the majority of it ends up on me…

I’ll let them off because they are cute. I let them off a lot of things because theyre cute. Maybe they are taking advantage of this fact. Damn these hamsters are clever sausages…

I tried to get a picture of Eve scoffing her greens but the girl was just too quick! Casper’s munching pics are to come later this week! 😀

The Sunday Riddle #24

Well I never.
Last weeks riddle seems to have stumped you all! Nobody got this one, shocking!!!
(Except my boyfriend, he got this one right – but he didn’t comment it, so 1/2 a point for you babe)

It cannot always be seen, it weighs absolutely nothing, but when put into a barrel, it makes it lighter. What is it?

You’ll all be kickin yourself when I reveal this answer to you…
Ready!?

The ANSWER:
A hole!

Oh I do enjoy my Sundays! I can kick back, relax, and watched everyone around my scratch their heads over the riddles I post 😛
Anyways, this weeks riddle is perhaps not as tricky as last weeks. I say perhaps, Im not too sure. I hope someone gets it this week!

Are you ready for this?? 😀

I fly, yet I have no wings. I cry, yet I have no eyes. Darkness follows me, lower light I never see.

Good luck guys, remember you have all week to answer.

P.S.
I have lots of wonderful photographs of our lovely pets for my Feel The Love Campaign but there are still room for a few more so please, if you havent already email me your favourite picture of your pet and the one thing you would tell them that they’d never forget! 😀

The post will be posted for Tuesday so all pictures must be sent before midnight TOMORROW. But just to make things easier for me, could you send them today?? 😛 Much appreciated folks! xxx

You Have Something In Your Teeth…

You know when you’re talking to a person and you suddenly spot that lingering piece of lunch clinging onto their front tooth?! That incredibly obvious spinach leaf just sitting their happily on that person tooth. They don’t know it’s there! They keep smiling away, oblivious to the toothy-horror going on in their own mouths.
And the worst part is, you can’t NOT stop looking at it once you’ve noticed it. It’s all you can look at. Don’t stare, don’t stare, don’t stare… Damn, I’m staring at it!!!
And then there is that socially awkward etiquette of do you point out the leaf and embarrass your companion, or leave it there and let them carry on regardless?!

Why am I going into extreme detail about this foody-faux-pas??
Well it happened to me today. And I found myself in the position where I was torn between embarrassing them and just letting it be.
I let it be.
But I did manage to sneak a photograph so you can all see the dilemma I was in…

20121124-180747.jpg

You see my problem.
Here is Casper, happily sitting in my palm after a good munch on a tasty broccoli stalk, and he didn’t quite manage to eat the lot. In fact, a large proportion of the treat was still hanging onto his front teeth. . .
And so the social conundrum began.

I didn’t risk upsetting him by pointing out “ere cas, you got some green stuff round ya mouth…” because he’s such a delicate bubba. So I just muttered “umm.. Lovely weather were having haha *realises its raining outside* or not….” forcing myself to keep eye contact.
Once I put him back to bed he was still none the wiser. Emptied the lot into his bed-food-cubby-hole and the bit stuck to his teeth vanished with it.
Crisis averted.

So my dear friends, what would you do in this situation?! Do you tell them they’ve got something there? Or do you leave them to it, hoping they’ll notice themselves??

Are boy hamsters better than female hamsters?

This is not quite the hormone fuelled battle of the sexes some of you readers may hope for…
This is a genuine question that potential hamster owners want to know before getting that special pet. I cannot believe I haven’t answered this question sooner to be honest! But I think we’ve realised that my organisational skills aren’t quite tip-top.

The female-male hamster debate has been ongoing and there seem to be the same contrasting opinions being recycled over and over again in online arguments. I will be discussing some of these ‘myths’ and giving my own opinion on the gender issue.

As an owner of 2 boys and 1 girl hamster (and a previous owner of 6 other male hamsters) I have been quite biased in my gender selections over the years. And genuinely, I had heard and believed some of the myths I am going to bust today. After getting a female hamster earlier this year, I feel I have a very credible and unbiased viewpoint on this well argumented topic.

Anyway, first of all I am going to bust some of these pesky myths.

Female hamsters are more aggressive than males.

Wrong.
The truth is hamsters are all unique and have their own unique personalities. To generalise the entire female hamster population to say they are all aggressive compared to their male counterparts is just not scientifically true. There is the issue that a female hamster will tend to be more territorial when pregnant or having given birth. (I also have noticed with my own female hamster she seems much more alert since having babies – even after all this time). I am assuming this is a maternal thing for them. Having said that, most hamster owners will have no intention to breed them and so the debate remains.

Long story short: there is no scientific fact or reasoning for females to be more aggressive than males.

Male hamsters are tamer than females.

Wrong again I’m afraid.
Taming a hamster has absolutely nothing to do with the gender. Its about the time and patience you put into that pet. If you spend 2 minutes handling your hamster on the first day of owning them and decide that they are difficult to tame and handle, then you aren’t going to have a great hamster experience. Hamsters take a while to relax and trust you are an owner. You have to remember they’ve been kept in small boxes, then put in a pet shop cage where people tap on the glass and make loud noises, then to be moved again into another box and taken to your home. You may think its an exciting time but you’re new hamster will be sh*tting it. That initial taming period is irrelevant to the sex of your ham.

Long story short: All hamsters are individual but if you put the time, patience and car into taming your hamster, the gender is irrelevant.

Female hamsters are smellier than males.

Don’t laugh ladies, this is true.

How are they smellier exactly? Well female hammy’s come ‘on heat’ every 4 or so days. This is their hammy way of letting a potential mate know they are about and ready to procreate (that’s the most sensible way I can put this). The unfortunate thing is, the smell produced by the lovely ladies is incredibly powerful – and quite honestly disgusting. After breeding my girl hamster Eve, I learnt that this pongy odour is a sign that they are just about to come off heat (so its a kind of last chance saloon for the men hamsters for another 4 days). If anything, having bred Eve has only made this 4-daily occurance rather strong and lingering. The boys know when she’s about that’s for sure!

Long story short: The girl hamsters produce an odour to attract the men. It is not a pleasant smell at all.

Male hamsters are bigger than female hamsters.

Wrong.
In fact, its the complete opposite. Female hamsters are usually much bigger than the male hamsters. This is harder to distinguish in the long-haired varieties of syrian, but the females can be up to double the size and weight of their male equivalents. This has something to do with the males role to hunt/scavenge for food and the females role to have the babies and feed them all (remembering female hamsters can have anything up to 20 babies, they need that extra weight behind them to get through the weaning process!!)

Long story short: The girls are generally bigger than the boys because their bodies are prepared for breeding litters of up to 20 babies.

So when it comes to deciding what gender you want your first hamster to be, you do not need to be persuaded by the untrue myths that girls are aggressive and the boys are easier to tame. Every hamster has his or her own personality, one aggressive and bad temperamented hamster may be a female but this is not the decided thing amongst the female population. The same could always be said about the males.

Eve (my female hamster) was tame after one hold of five minutes. Dexter (male number 1) took nearly 3 weeks to tame and squealed like a piglet for the first week of his new home. Casper (male number 2) was pretty tame after a few holds. None of them have been aggressive even in them first stages of the taming process.

If I had to recommend a gender for a first hamster buyer – I would say go for a male hamster, only because the females can be quite smelly at times and its instantly noticeable. But that doesn’t mean female hamsters are nasty! Eve is the most energetic, explorational and affectionate hamster out of the lot of ’em!

Hope this has helped, any questions – I have a contact page 😀

Feel The Love Campaign

After yesterdays post about how difficult I am finding it to cuddle my pets regularly and plentifully over the day, I realized how I was not alone. Infact I was far from it!

So many of you commented telling me about how you too struggle to manage the balance like me and I got some wonderful advice on how to “deal” with it.

Like, holding/snuggling even for a short amount of time once a day. That daily interaction is enough to keep your pets occupied and remind them that you haven’t forgotten them. We all like to be reassured some days – pets are like this too.

And knowing that I am not a bad person for not always finding the time to let them all run about in their exercise balls makes me feel slightly less guilty about my scheduling.  We are all human after all and sometimes an hour long cuddle and playtime is not practical.

I talk to them and stroke them if I don’t actually hold them. So I’m doing my best and giving it my all if nothing else.

Anyway, I have strayed off topic a bit here.
I want to put together a picture gallery.
A picture gallery of ALL the loved and adored creatures from the blogosphere!!

Please email me your favourite picture of your furry at hamsterdiaries@yahoo.co.uk and in the message part include the following.
If you could tell your pet ONE THING, that’ll they’ll understand and remember forever, what would it be?

I really need all your help for this one guys – it doesnt have to be much, just a sentence is perfect!
I just really want to do this post for all the loved animals, big and small 😀

Thanks 🙂
