What To Do When Your Hamster Dies

I get emailed a lot of questions, some I can answer privately and others I think hmmm other people might wanna read this to.
One of these emails was about what to do when you lose a pet hamster.
So to try and help, I have put together a little list of what I do when I lose a loved hammy.
I have lost lots of hamsters over my lifetime. Over the course of this blog alone, I lost my 3 hammy stars AND 13 beautiful baby hamsters.
If anyone can understand the grief of losing a pet, I can.

RIP HAMSTERS

  1. Cry. Cry as much as you want to and feel the need to. Hamsters are little members of the family after all. They have been with you for years and when they pass away, it hurts! It is okay to cry and it helps to cry, so let it all out.
    .
  2. Casper on my mousematPut all the pictures of your passed hammy up wherever you are. On your bedroom wall, on your school folders, on your work desk, anywhere!
I have my favourite picture of Casper snuggled up asleep inside my blanket as my mousemat at work and pictures of all 3 of them on my electronic photo frame so every 30 minutes, I get to see a happy pic of my fur babies.
Makes me smile every time. 🙂 ❤
    .
  3. Make a memorial for them. Every hamster since I was a kid has been buried in my garden. There is a row of ceramic toadstools along the back fence in the garden so I can see where all of my pets have been laid to rest. Hamster Grave ToadstoolIts a lovely reminder 🙂 They are all different colours so I can recognise which hammy lays where.
When the babies died, I planted an orchid for them in their memory.
It was a beautiful plant and I thought it a fitting tribute for them.
Plants and gravestones are a great way to distract you from the negative of losing a loved pet and a lasting tribute to their memory.
    .
    .
  4. Get a new hamster.
It may seem drastic and the last thing you’d want to do but I promise you a new baby hamster is the perfect therapy. You get to have all the fur snuggles and a whole new personality to get to learn and love.
Whenever you are ready and have grieved for your lost pet, I cant recommend enough the benefits of getting that cage all cleaned and sorted ready for a new furry-face. You can relive the great times of your lost pet, with a new one.Banjo the Hamster Offering a pet a new home is the most rewarding thing ever and it will keep you smiling, guaranteed!!
You can tell your new fur baby all about their older brother/sister that has passed away. I found the whole experience of a new pet, the best remedy for a broken heart.
Banjo is now my little rock – I couldn’t be without him.

Nothing and no one will replace your lost hamster and it really is the worst pain you can feel. But this doesn’t mean your world should crumble and end.
You just have to start a new chapter as difficult as it seems.

❤ Things WILL get better and your heart will mend, I promise you. ❤

Feel free to comment below on your fur babies that have passed over the rainbow bridge. We can have a little tribute xxxx

HMRR: Cookie, The Ill Monster Munch

Helloooo people !

This will be quite a short blog, sorry peeps

Hope you have all had a great weekend and your little hamsters have been behaving themselves, no escaping, no stealing your remote control car and whizzing away?
No..ah..good, but now I’m worrying myself that hamsters may take over the world..
Oh jeez…the poop…it would be everywhere!
No….just…I’m stopping now……

Cookie the famous hamster!! :DSo recently I have been keeping a close eye on my little Cookie, as she has not been well.
On Friday evening I noticed some strange colouring on the area where she pees. I took a closer look as I was a bit worried, unfortunately it was blood.

So, my hamster was peeing blood! I called the vet and got her in that evening. He was holding her and looked at me and seriously said the most hilarious sentence you can say to a person who has a hamster “do you think you could hold her still for a minute or so“ ….I must admit…I laughed so hard.

I got told, it is either a UTI ( urinary tract infection ) or because she maybe older than we think, it could be a womb issue, so I was given the choice of either investigation or antibiotics. I chose antibiotics because if in the time of her having it, it got worse, she would go straight back.
But right now it seems to be clearing, each day the red colour is less and less – yaayyyyy!

So far I have not stopped laughing at her reactions to the anti b, she scrunches her nose up, sticks her tongue out, teeth together…. looks like a child sucking on a lemon!
It is such a hilarious face for such a little Cookie.
Even when she’s in her cage after the meds, she refused to come near me, as much as I find it so funny, I wish she knew it was all to help her 🙂

Have a good week peeps,

Cookie and Hayley

We love keeping up to date with Cookie and Hayley – Banjo loves sniffing the screen when I am typing too!
We just thought we would add a little note on the end of this post to say how quickly all you hammy-mummy and daddy’s need to react when you see blood in their pee or on their bums.
Hayley did the totally correct thing by going straight to the vets!
Eve suffered with a womb infection from having her babies (read about it here) and the antibiotics weren’t successful and I will always wonder if I had acted quicker if she would have made it!

HMRR: A Hamster’s Life

Hello people !

Today, I thought I would write up a bit more of little Cookies history and more about her!

Be prepared for upset, happiness and a couple of bad times

So, Cookie was given to me by an old family friend. She was left in a house when her family moved out. She was left behind and we are unsure how long she was by herself. She was found in a cage with little food and little water, so it was suspected she went back to life saving burying and eating very little.

She got given to a woman who had to find a home for her; now there was 2 options, me or a woman who had a girl that was 6, but was scared of hamsters…
She thought her daughter could deal with it.
We all thought different!
cookie1 If the child got bored and the mother wouldn’t go near her…how would that end up? Don’t even want to think about it…..

So, she ended up with me! YAY!
I went out and bought her everything she would need, I spoilt her rotten, it was awesome……and expensive!! But I got home, put all her bedding in, put her house in, and some food and a water bottle.

Half an hour later a woman arrived with a bag of goodies and a little brown carry box. When this little hamster came out I was so shocked by her colouring, her tiny toes and the cute nose…I put her in her cage and left her get on with settling in. Names…yes…names, it took 2 days and a lot if randomly shouting a name before I called her Cookie.

The name was because of her colouring, she is such a friendly little munchkin and as silly as it sounds…now, I would be lost without my little Cookie Monster.

So far she has cracked a leg, it healed awkwardly but she has never been in pain and has never stopped being a spider hamster and then falling on her face J she has been seriously ill in the heat, she never makes noise yet she was crying uncontrollably. ..which in turn made me cry.

Name: Cookie , Age: unknown , Colour: a mix of black, white, grey and tiny pink nose and toes.

She is toilet trained, she will never do it if she is out of her cage, ever.

She loves climbing all over you, including your face….which I found out the other day….that was awkward. She loves everyone and never bites unless ill or very…..verrryyyy grumpy 😀

Never sits still…loves escaping….being upside down and trying to jump from insane heights, I swear, I have a heart attack each time…

So, all in all…I think Cookie started out with a nice life, then it got bad…then it got to the point that she was so spoilt she didn’t know what to do with all the things, though I’m glad she came to me 🙂

Hope you enjoyed reading about Cookie,

In case I don’t see ya, good afternoon, good evening and goodnight!

HMRR: Cookie The Hyper Hamster

Hello again people !!!

I do hope I did not bore you with my last 3 posts. I hope you enjoyed reading and want to read more about little Cookie, just as I love reading all your posts!

So, I was having a read up about all the things hamsters could and couldn’t eat, I read you could give seedless apple, so whilst I was nibbling away on some apple, I bit a corner off and held it to her cage.
Here comes the funny part!!!APPLE APPLE APPLE - GIMME!

Next thing I know, she’s going insane!
Since I had her she’s never ran at this speed, she was climbing, hanging from the cage upside down,  she didn’t rest for 3 hours…..my Cookie Monster was hyper!

After a while of her escapades, including falling on her face numerous time and looking a bit dazed, I put her in her little ball that she rolls across the floor in.

I couldn’t stop laughing at the speed and how often she would run into a doorframe…….this is the point where I’m glad hamsters can’t drive cars! Oh, what a thought, hey!?

Has your hamster ever gone a bit insane and driven a car or got hyper off some food they’ve eaten ???

Let us all have a giggle at the escapades of the hammys in your life, look forward to reading it all!!

Bob The Golden Retriever & His Furry/Feathery Friends

I love a good hammy news story and I have an absolute WINNER for you today.
I hope you animal lovers are ready to be ‘awwww’-ing and cooing all over these pictures.

A dog owner in Brazil has shared some pictures of her gorgeous golden retriever with some unusual friends.

Yes Bob the Dog really is friends with 8 birdies and a little hamster!!
AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!

Now I’m not going to recommend that you introduce your big doggies to the little-furries in your lives. I don’t think this is a very common case – however in this particular case, these furries are all the best of friends!

Hamster Treat Recipe #3: Hamster Pasta

Pasta?! Hamster Pasta?!I let Banjo run amok on my worktops the other day in yet another desperate attempt to capture some non-blurry photos.. It didnt quite go as planned.
Turns out he has a fascination with PASTA?!
Well the picture of pasta at least.
I’m not sure quite how well the real thing would go down but now the less this seemed to capture his attention for long enough (just)!

Well after a little bit of interweb research, turns out pasta and hamsters in the same sentence is not uncommon. This is a REAL thing.
Lucy the Hamster eating pastaThis photo is of Lucy the hamster tucking into an adorable spaghetti meal for 1 :’)
It is beyond adorable if you ask me!

Well after the success of the hamster pizza, I thought it only seemed right to go one step further in this culinary adventure and make Banjo a little pasta dish just like Lucy 😀

It doesnt take as much step-by-step guidance on this one. I cooked some noodles up, let them cool and then added some Pasta for Hamsters! :D baby corn and some raspberry for the sweetness (I would have used tomatoes but I didnt have any in my fridge – and seeing as homemade treats are all about making use of what you have, there was no need to trek to the shops just for Banjo’s treat!)

It went down juuuuust as fabulous as the hamster pizza 😀

He loved every little lick and mouthful!
There is something very satisfying about making food for hamsters which looks like human food! 😀 I think I am becoming a little crazy with this. I keep thinking up entire menus for him… Never had such a spoilt ham ;D

I really recommend getting creative with your hamster treats too. The stuff in shops is all well and good and easy too – I get it. But using the left over Hamster pastafresh stuff you have laying about is a neat little way to keep you hamster interested and engaged. 🙂

Plus its pretty satisfying when you see your hard work devouring in front of your eyes! 😀 As long as you’re careful with your ingredients using only hamster safe foods, you can literally go to town on your rodent-menu 😀

If you fancy showing off any of your own hamster culinary delights, feel free to email me snaps to hamsterdiaries@yahoo.co.uk or you can post it to the HamsterDiaries Facebook page for yourself. Or if you have any rodent-recipes of your own, let me know and I’ll try them out for little Joey 😀

Love love love!

National Broccoli Day

National Broccoli Day, YES that's a thing!

I have managed to lure the illusive Banjo into some pictures with the help of a little broccoli 😀
Turns out this green veg is actually incredibly good for you in so any more ways than I originally realised.
Did you know 1 cup of raw broccoli contains the same amount of vitamin C as an orange! Amazing right! 😀

Its also high in vitamin A which is all round fabulous for your body.
So basically no wonder Banjo loves the stuff!
We should all spread the broccoli love! ❤ Treat your little furries to a stem in the sake of good health yeah?!

OMG and as if by terrifyingly spooky coincidence.. the 22nd of March is OFFICIALLY National Broccoli Day!!
That is crazzzzzy spooky..
Even MORE reason to treat everyone to the green stuff!

Love love love! Oh and pretty please with broccoli on top can you guys follow via email, like and comment. Show me some support? 😀

Mister Anti-Social Pants!

Nibble Nibble :DBanjo has been very quiet so and so recently. He hides in his bed until all the lights are out and then slowly crawls out to explore. Then he will run and run and run until the sun comes up and I draw back the curtains.
He is an all-night marathon runner!

I know hamsters are nocturnal but Banjo really does take the biscuit with it. I want cuddles little man!!! But I don’t want to wake you up ;(

I’m sure he does it to tease me. If I sneak out when he is already running he just sits and lets me pick him up. I think its more stunned silence rather than wanting snuggles too but I’ll take what I can get !

Anyways because of mister antisocial pants over there, it means that getting pictures of him is getting more and more tricky.
So I am recycling some of the pics I managed to get of him from the pizza day. It was the only time he sat still for more than 2 seconds… Maybe that is a hint hint I should make him more delicious treats.. Maybe he is holding me to photography-ransom with the payment of homemade treats…. Hmmmmm you may have got me here little mister.

Sorry for the rant and rave. I needed it off my chest and I thought little Banjo needed some face time on the blog.
Facebook DOMINATION here we come ;D Hope you all have a fabulous weekend 😀

Oh and if you havent seen already – we made 1000 likes on Facebook. YAYAYA!
So I will reward all those likers with exclusive hammy updates and whatnot as a thank you for your support 😀

Pareidolia; Hamster Fur Stylee

Pareidolia is when you lay back in the grass on a sunny day and spy all the clouds in the sky, finding shapes and faces and things… Okay so you dont HAVE to be looking at clouds. The man in the moon is a good example of this 🙂

I bring up this long fancy word because while Banjo was running around like a crazy hamster on my lap, I noticed a dark pattern on his back fur.

A pattern in the fur?!

Am I the only one who sees this?!

I kind think it looks like a four leaf clover or a big cross. Maybe there is treasure inside his belly and his fur is the map ;D

Anyone got any suggestions as to what this pattern could be? Anything creative??! 😀
