I always like it when hamster-y related things pop up in the news.
It gives me the opportunity to expand on my blogging topics and talk about something a little different without straying too far from my beloved topic 😉
So back toward the end of April, here was a news story about a baby Java-Mouse Deer born in a zoo in Spain.
This is what the little guy looks like. Isnt it just the cutest little thing!
I read on the Daily Mirror, the baby Java mouse deer is one of the smallest hoofed animals in the world, and is very rare – there are only currently 43 in Europe!! Only 43 of these little cuties?! That’s just not okay! I want one as a pet!!!
This endangered little beaut is ‘hamster sized, weighing no more than 100grams!’ <<<genuinely “hamster-sized” is the phrasing the tabloids used! And this tiny little nugget is what I have grabbed onto to write this post today! Clutching at straws springs to mind but HEY lets run with it 😉
I am more fascinated by the fact this tiny little baby deer weighs less than 100grams!
You know what this means… its time to crack out the scales and weigh the boys!
Casper bravely took the first step onto the kitchen scales…
And yes folks, that’s correct! Casper weighs 130 grams! Which means he weighs MORE than that baby deer! If anything screams you need to go on a diet, its when a baby deer weighs more than you Cas geeesh!! Lay off the carbs boyo! 😉
I’m only kidding, 130grams is a perfectly healthy size for a fully grown Syrian hamster.
And its crazy to think this little guy is bigger than a baby deer. That can’t be normal!! 😛 I guess that is why this baby deer made the news afterall!
Anyways, I thought it would be only fair to weigh Dexter too! He is a lot skinnier than Casper too so I was curious to see how much he weighed too..
Deep breath Dex…. suck in!!
And there you have it, 115 grams!
So a little skinnier than Cas but still a healthy size for a Syrian.
And more to the point, even dainty little Dexter is BIGGER than this newborn baby deer!!! That is really difficult to imagine!!!
So I know this is a little bit of a random post but now you know somewhere in Spain, there is a tiny little Java-Mouse Deer which is smaller than my little hamsters! Food for thought folks! 😉
