The Illusive Face Of Banjo The Hamster

Banjo looking simply adorable!

Whoever said hamsters were’t cute.. clearly doesn’t read this blog!! πŸ˜€
Joey doesn’t like to sit still ever. He has permanent ants in his pants and wiggles about like crazy.
But there is the odd occasion he will sit perfectly still under my palm, snuggle into my tummy and pose nicely for a photo… its a rarity but this picture is proof it DOES happen :’) Continue reading

Happy Mothers Day

Dear Mum,

I know you read my blog and I know you’re my number one fan, so I thought what better way to say Happy Mothers Day, again, is to brag about how fabulous you are on the world wide web for thousands of people to read πŸ™‚ Hope you’re blushing already πŸ˜‰

You are always always always there for me when I need help making sense of my bills to when I’m running low on dinner supplies. Nothing is ever too much hassle and for that I will always be grateful πŸ™‚ You celebrate my successes, big and little. And that means more to me than you’ll ever know ❀

I know I have caused you plenty of headaches in the past but I wouldn’t be where I am right now without you. I am the LUCKIEST person on the planet to have a mum as wonderful as you.

You love all my weird and wonderful quirks – proving that motherly love really is unconditional! I mean, I write about hamsters every day, not sure you can get much more loopy! πŸ˜‰ Oh and I won’t even mention my obsession with mint sauce πŸ˜‰

Whenever I feel poorly, I come and stay and you bring me soup and chocolate in bed. Its nice to be looked after like that even though I’m all grown up (well at least pretending to be) πŸ˜›

You know exactly what I like and don’t like. Whether its when I come for dinner and I get round carrots not baton carrots haha or when you go past New Look and spot a top or dress I will just love. It doesn’t have to be big, I always appreciate being in your thoughts πŸ™‚

And as much as I try to cook lunches as well as you, I dont think I will EVER quite get there.

You are amazingly fabulous and I love love love LOVE you to bits! πŸ˜€ Thank you for supporting me and for being the worlds bestest πŸ™‚

Lots and lots of love, your Gemstones πŸ™‚ xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Flashback Fursday

Dexter the Syrian Hamster in all his glory! Its very rapidly coming up to 3 years since I started this blog. I thought it was only appropriate to show a flashback photo of the little Syrian that started it all.

Dexter was a very shy and nervous hamster.

It took him a LONG time to come out of his shell. But as soon as he was there, he really did become a cutie of a hamster.

Dexter was the little face that inspired me to start blogging. I wanted to start sharing his little adventures and it all snowballed from there.

I have taken several breaks from the blog but it has never been forgotten, I replied to emails and plotted comebacks and whatnot.

HamsterDiaries is my little hobby and I really enjoy taking pictures and writing and all the joys of blogging that come with it.
So keep on reading and commenting and showing me the love! I really do appreciate every word everyone has to say and I make a huge effort to reply to everything πŸ™‚
Subscribe/Follow via email, like the facebook page and subscribe on YouTube too! The complete hamster-y fix.

My Hamster Has A Skateboard

When I need hamster-y inspiration where do I turn..
Why the internet of course!! I do love to discover how far and wide the spread of hamstery awe reaches. And I have discovered its reached poetry!
So here to cheer up your Wednesday evening, is the sweetest little poem by Kenn Nesbitt.
And of course Banjo gave his best illustrations in his exercise ball / figurative skateboard…. πŸ˜‰

Banjo in his exercise ball :D

My hamster has a skateboard.
When he rides it, though, he falls.
He takes off like a maniac
and crashes into walls.

He screams, “Geronimo!”
and then goes crashing down the stairs.
He’s good at knocking tables down
and slamming into chairs.

He’ll slalom through the living room
and then you’ll hear a, “Splat!”
which means that he’s collided with
my mother or the cat.

He plows right into cabinets,
and smashes into doors,
I think he’s wrecked on every bed
and every chest of drawers.

It’s fun to watch him ride
because you’re sure to hear a smash.
He doesn’t skate so well but, boy,
he sure knows how to crash.

–Kenn Nesbitt

This poem sums up Banjo perfectly. I love it!
Anyone else got any hamster rhymes ?!
Comments pweaaaaase! πŸ˜€

Pinch Punch, First Of The Month!

I cannot believe it is July already! Where has the time gone!!! It seems to be slipping away so blooming quickly!
The hamsters are in the full swing of summer now. Keeping them hydrated with juicy treats and being kept in cool areas of my little flat πŸ˜›

Casper has even mastered the sunbathers pose of choice!

Daydreaming hamster

He looks a little uncomfy there but he was a little stunned for some reason. He just stopped and stared into the abyss for a good few minutes! I think he was just in total calmness!
I find myself slipping into that daydream state at work quite often to be honest with you but shhhh dont tell my boss! πŸ˜€

I have a few posts lined up for July already, so hopefully I can keep posting daily throughout the month despite a lot of commitments. But I am working my little socks off to keep you updated and entertained with hamster-y goodness!

Thank you to all of you that are following HamsterDiaries! It always put s a smile on my face seeing a new reader following and I am loving checking out your blogs too! Opening my eyes to a whole range of blogging topics! πŸ˜€
Lots of hamstery love!

Moving House Is An Exhausting Business

It must seem like all hamsters do is sleep all the time.hushaby babyyyy
They do other things too I swear.
But usually them other things keep my hands full so taking pictures is tricky. Hence the majority of pics are of snoozes.

But I guess this is a good opportunity to explain why Casper is so tired.

We have been moving house. (That’s me Dexter and Casper of course) πŸ™‚

Its been exhausting for me too, but all the packing and lifting and ikea-building has clearly taken it out of Cas too πŸ˜‰

I have been sleeping like a baby, scheduling posts so that I don’t let you readers down for a single day on top of working 7 days a week and all the rest.

Me and sleepy Cas have a lot more in common because of this of course..
Must be why I have been obsessing over sleepy photos for the last few weeks, sorrrrrrrry! πŸ˜›

This is me trying to balance blogging with a life haha. So I appreciate all your support and patience too.

I hope you enjoy the pictures anyway. I know my rantings leave a lot to be desired in terms of writing ability and blah blah but I am just putting my brain onto paper. Well onto screen in this case but you know what I mean πŸ™‚ Its how I have always enjoyed blogging and its how I intend to continue too.

Blogs; When Do You Read?

Now I think its fair to say I am very much BACK in the blogging swing of things! πŸ˜€Β
And as a very keen blogger, I have started thinking of a bunch of questions to try and improve the blog. BUT most of these questions, I cannot answer by myself. What time do people read blogs?
Don’t worry, I am not about to spring a survey of a 100 questions on you, I just have one particular question I am really curious about.

What time do you get yourself onto WordPress to read up on the blogs you like?

Is it a first thing in the morning routineΒ to accompany your Weetabix and coffee? Or is it a lunch break thing where you have nothing much to do at your desk and need a bit of light entertainment? Or is it even a bit of bedtime reading for you??
Maybe I am reading into all this timing malarkey a little too much and you just read and catchup when you can, but I am dying to know for sure.

I have been scheduling my posts to go public at 8am GMT every day, not for any particular reason other than it was about the time I would get to work and figured people would maybe like to have something new to read from the morning onward really.

I even wanted to keep this post hamsterific so got Casper to pose with a clock.Casper and the Clock, he can tell the time HONEST! :p

‘HOW VERY RELEVANT’ I hear you scream πŸ˜‰

HAHAH, I even tried to get Dexter to pose nicely with a clock but he really does have none of it. An unnatural celebrity.
But Casper posed away very nicely for me.

And I know it looks like he is even nibbling the cushion m iPad is sat on in the picture to the right, but he isn’t I swear.
Even Diva-Casper needs a little bit of encouragment to sit still sometimes. So a bit of broccoli may have appears in his paws…

Anyway back to the point..
I know it may seem trivial and it could be completely RANDOM but at least then I will know.
As for some reason this thought has been bothering me since I began blogging again…

So, I would be mighty grateful if you could answer the poll below, just to give me a rough idea of what time people are reading.
I understand there is a time difference and as this blog reaches every corner of the globe, my 8amΒ is different to your 8am kinda thing, but going on your time of day wherever in the world you are, when do you check out the blogs you follow?

Thank you in advance for your participation. It makes setting up the hamsters with props that little bit more worth it πŸ˜‰

Hamster-y cuddles!Β

Free Hamster Games & Apps

This post is for the folks out there who are as attached to their phones as they are their little furries!
I have downloaded and played scientifically investigated 4 hamster game apps. Yes, really technical stuff really. πŸ˜‰

And all of these apps are FREE so you don’t even need to touch your purse to kill a bit of boredom, what can be better than that!

My Virtual Hamster

So the first app I played was My Virtual Hamster. Sounds pretty self explanatory right. And it is.Β My Virtual Hamster
You get given your hamster (looks a little like Dexter, just fatter obviously). You have to make sure the two ‘health’ bars on the top left are kept full by feeding your hamster and washing him and playing with him… Yeah the novelty of this virtual pet wears off pretty quick I’ll be honest.

The minigames you have to play to keep your hamster happy are urmm simple to say the least. As you can see from the bottom two pictures, it hardly takes a brain cell to match the silhouette to the corresponding picture. And there is a POOP game!! Yes you really have to scoop that poop!
But for a freebie, this game is pretty sweet! And perfect for your littluns too.

Hamster Dress-Up

So this is another pretty cute game, pretty simple too. The objective? Well there is no objective. Just to dress up your hamster of course!Hamster Dress-Up The options for clothing and accessories are limited unless you pay for them which is a bit annoying, and you can only dress up the one hamster unless you are willing to pay for the priviledge too but it’ll kill a good five minutes of your time if you so need it! πŸ˜›

As you can see I have made space-ham and princess-ham… Okay so its pretty naff really. And tricky to use, with the ‘outfits’ not fitting the underneath layer at all well. But then again I am not entirely sure what I was quite expecting from a dress up your hamster app .. πŸ˜›

Hamster Roll

So this free app I got a little more into. The aim is simple. Your little hamster is in a ball and you have to tilt your phone to roll that Hamster Rollhamster to the left and right. The levels then move toward the top of your screen, getting progressively faster and you have to make sure your hammy gets through the gap to the next level.
Now its not as addictive as good old flappy bird but it sure is fun to try and whizz the hamster down the layers! And frustratingly moreish.
Okay so it might be a little addictive πŸ˜›

It also throws obstacles in your way to keep you on your toes and there are different surfaces to try and up the odds on this little app.

And if there wasnt enough hamster-y-ness in this game for you, you have to collect sunflower seeds as you go! THATS BRILLIANT!

And you can see my high score there. If you think you can beat it, its a free app and I say BRING IT ON!! :p

So basically I have just issued you a challenge there so give it Β a download, its free (as are all of the apps on this post) so why not! The worst that will happen is you lose 10 minutes of your life to a silly app and I’ll have beaten your score still πŸ˜‰

And last but not least…
Fat Hamster

There isnt much to NOT like about this little app. A lighthearted way to poke fun at fat hamsters, so bloomin’ brilliant stuff really.Fat Hamster

The wheel rolls automatically and the fat hamster doesnt move unless you tap him. The tap makes him run a few steps but if he runs too far up the side he falls off, with the look of sheer TERROR on his face.. And if he doesnt run quick enough the same fate happens for the little guy.

So basically you become a madly tapping crazy person!! It was definitely addictive and such a giggle, why wouldnt you want to play!
And out of all of the apps I played for this post, this game was the only one I played that didn’t crash. So that is definitely a big tick in that box!! πŸ˜€

So there you have 4 hamstery apps you can download for free from the Apple App Store. I had a lot of fun writing this post. I may have to do something like this more often πŸ˜‰ If I had to recommend one the most it would have to be Hamster Roll, just for quality of game play really!
But if you get a free minute, try out Fat Hamster. It is sure to make you giggle if nothing else! πŸ˜€

I hope there is enough hamster-ness in this post for you. I tried. πŸ˜‰

Deer-y Me, You Weigh HOW Much?!

I always like it when hamster-y related things pop up in the news.
It gives me the opportunity to expand on my blogging topics and talk about something a little different without straying too far from my beloved topic πŸ˜‰

So back toward the end of April, here was a news story about a baby Java-Mouse Deer born in a zoo in Spain.
This is what the little guy looks like. Isnt it just the cutest little thing!

Java Mouse Deer

I read on the Daily Mirror, the baby Java mouse deer is one of the smallest hoofed animals in the world, and is very rare – there are only currently 43 in Europe!! Only 43 of these little cuties?! That’s just not okay! I want one as a pet!!!

This endangered little beaut is ‘hamster sized, weighing no more than 100grams!’ <<<genuinely “hamster-sized” is the phrasing the tabloids used! And this tiny little nugget is what I have grabbed onto to write this post today! Β Clutching at straws springs to mind but HEY lets run with it πŸ˜‰

I am more fascinated by the fact this tiny little baby deer weighs less than 100grams!
You know what this means… its time to crack out the scales and weigh the boys!

Casper bravely took the first step onto the kitchen scales…

Casper the Syrian hamster being weighed!

And yes folks, that’s correct! Casper weighs 130 grams! Which means he weighs MORE than that baby deer! If anything screams you need to go on a diet, its when a baby deer weighs more than you Cas geeesh!! Lay off the carbs boyo! πŸ˜‰

I’m only kidding, 130grams is a perfectly healthy size for a fully grown Syrian hamster.
And its crazy to think this little guy is bigger than a baby deer. That can’t be normal!! πŸ˜› I guess that is why this baby deer made the news afterall!

Anyways, I thought it would be only fair to weigh Dexter too! He is a lot skinnier than Casper too so I was curious to see how much he weighed too..
Deep breath Dex…. suck in!!

Does my butt look big in this!?

And there you have it, 115 grams!
So a little skinnier than Cas but still a healthy size for a Syrian.
And more to the point, even dainty little Dexter is BIGGER than this newborn baby deer!!! That is really difficult to imagine!!!

So I know this is a little bit of a random post but now you know somewhere in Spain, there is a tiny little Java-Mouse Deer which is smaller than my little hamsters! Food for thought folks! πŸ˜‰

Enjoy the rest of hump-day folks! If you have any hammy-news stories you’d like to see picked to pieces, drop a comment in the box below, or send me a email or whatever! Its always good to have requests and inputs πŸ™‚
