Banjo was just a little baby hamster when I got him and when I got him home for the first time, it very quickly became apparent that I did not have a happy hamster!
Introducing him slowly to his new home became a very stressful event and there was a lot of noise coming out of my little hamster!
The only way I can describe the sounds, were like a screaming and crying baby!
What you are about to hear on this video is going to sound distressing – you have been warned!
Please note I had left little baby Joey to get accustomed to his new home for a whole day.
As you can hear Banjo is really putting his lungs to the test.
The crying continued for what felt like hours!
What does crying mean?
Like with babies, crying is a sign of distress. Hamsters are solitary creatures and so they need to be vocal to be heard! And hamsters aren’t so good at speaking human π
It can also be a sign of pain, so if this is out of character behavior for your little hammy then take note – they’re trying to tell you something!
How can I stop my hamster crying?
Give them some space. You are big and scary, they are little and easily intimidated! It is going to be frustrating when you just want to cuddle with your new pet but your hamster is nervous and they will need time to adjust to their surroundings. Patience is the key with this one!
The main thing to remember is DON’T PANIC!
This will get better over time.
You just need to build up trust with your new furry friend. Every pet has their own personality. Some need a little longer to get used to people than others.
Taming hamsters can be a lengthy process. And little Joey here is going to be a challenge – but all shall be shared!
If you have a new hamster then make sure you subscribe via email, then you wont miss a thing. And with a new hamster there is plenty to talk about!
More of Banjo the hamster coming soon!! π

Wait is there a Joey and banjo?
Wow. U are brave not to freak out. This happened to me too and I sorta went barrerk. Like I thought I was gonna die let alone albus my hamster.
This is helpful to me to know why he was doing this
Triple thanks!
Nooo just the one hammy, I nicknamed him Joey, I experimented with nicknames like Banjy, Banjoey but Joey just kinda stuck (The full name Banjo is for when he’s naughty!!) Aww its comforting to know that I’m no the only one having experienced this – its terrifying!
Wow! That is a really sad sound. So much like a human baby! I hope your boy gets used to his forever home soon.
Love and licks,
Cupcake
What a sad sound! Poor little fella
Whee hope he settles in soon π
He just loves the treats that go into his cage when he kicks up a fuss! :p
I go my first hamster and I just starting taming two days ago and my breeder told me to spend 15 min with him in the morning and 15 in the evening. So I have trying to get him to come out and run around my lap for 15 min, but he is reluctant and suborn. I just want him to like me! So help me!
It will take a lot longer than 15 mins I think – it took me ageeeeees to tame Banjo as he was super stubborn. Keep getting him out, little and often as you can. Its just a case of being persistent! Keep at it!
