Sunflower Seeds and Broccoli

Dexter is a bit unusual in the fact he wont go scoffing anything and everything you put in front of him. Hes a very fussy boy in reality.

As you can see from his food bowl, there is an array of titbits in the hamster muesli which Dexter will pick through.
The sunflower seeds are the first to go so I think we know what the favourite treat is there.
Then the peanuts, followed by the dried banana slices, then the green flakey things which eventually leaves the bowl with these little green and brown pellets. I think its normal for pets to pick out their favourite bits of food so Im not too worried about the fact he despises these green and brown pellets.

Im also trying a range of fresh vegetables in his diet to make sure he stays hydrated throughout all that playtime!

Dexter then discovered broccoli.

He loved nibbling the end bits and munched away until he realised there were shoulders to climb up nearby which was distracting.
Fresh greenery always needs to be given in moderation as too much of the good stuff and they’ll get upset tummies and diarrhoea.

We then put the stalk into his cage and waited until he rediscovered it on his explorations – which didn’t take very long at all!

He prefers the ends rather than the stem but seems to have enjoyed it all because checked again on the progress of the broccoli shortly after and realized it has all been gobbled up – little piggy!

Were going to keep giving him different treats over the next few weeks to see what is the favourite!

Next on the hit-list is baby corn so we shall let you know how that goes down!

🙂 Comment, like or follow Dexter!
Still so much more to show you all! 😀

  1. One of my hamsters is called Dexter… But my Dexter is a girl! Pet shop said she was a guy.

Whoops! I had a choice of a boy or a girl at the shop.. couldnt resist Dexter from the minute I saw him 😛

      • 🙂 I ended up with unintentional baby hamsters, but luckily, they all went to good homes!

        • chaoticscribbles

Aww, how many babies were in your litter?

          • She had 8. Mother hamsters can eat their babies if stressed, but luckily, none were eaten! 😀

Thats a good sized litter, glad you got them all rehomed 😛 You clearly took good care of the mumma 🙂

              • I would have been happy to keep any that I couldn’t rehome. Most were rehomed to friends so I could still see the little guys!

                • chaoticscribbles

Thats always handy then! Did you buy the mum and then find out she was pregnant ? I want to have some hammy babies at some point. Ill settle Dexter first before getting any more 🙂

                  • I was keeping her in a cage with another male at the time. She lives with 4 other females now, though!

                    • chaoticscribbles

Oops! I bet they were super cute!!

                    • Yep. All hamsters are cute! Even one eyed hamsters are cute 🙂

  2. Well I don’t know about hamsters but I have to limit my ratty boys eating nuts and seeds because too much good fat is very bad. They would eat nothing but sunflower seeds if I let them!
Corn wheels (cobs cut into slices) capsicum, mashed sweet potato with tuna and rice bubbles with milk drive them WILD!!
I actually saw Squirrel SHOVELLING s/potato and tuna into his mouth with his hands trying to fit the whole dinner in! I couldn’t believe it lol. Speaking of piggies 🙂

Yeah, Dex sits there and scoffs the sunflower seeds 😛 Hahaha, boys love their food! 😀 Will try giving Dexter corn wheels at some point – need to spread out the amount of treats he’s getting at the moment!

  3. Heston does exactly the same with the green and brown bits. What I tend to do is wake him up in the morning and while he is still in bed I hand feed him some of the green and brown bits. He puts them in his pouch and then about mid afternoon I hear him nibbling them. That way he gets all the nutrients that he’s tried to avoid and doesn’t have to bother getting up for a snack!

Awww! Dexter isn’t fond of taking food from my hand. He prefers to munch it when no-one is looking! Heston sounds pampered – lucky thing 😀

      • He is treated as if he’s a human member of the family – I admit! But we never feed him anything bad and I keep treats very strict. He has so many toys that he has his own big plastic storage box for them. Like an actual child!

HAHAHA, thats brilliant! I will defo’s be building up a box full of his stuff – its hidden away under a side table at the minute!

Squeak up folks! What do you think??
