Where can you sell baby hamsters?

So your situation is your syrian hamster has given birth to babies!
Firstly CONGRATULATIONS!
Secondly, where can you now sell your furry offspring??

BEFORE you consider selling your baby hamsters you must make sure they are old enough to be separated from the mother.
In Syrian hamsters this is recommended between 3-4 weeks earliest and no later than 6-8 weeks.

 So WHERE CAN YOU SELL BABY HAMSTERS;

  • Ask Friends and Family
This is your best and should be your first port of call. Ask everyone you know if they want a hamster or anyone they know would like a hamster! Carry a photo of the babies on your phone or something as a cute face can be verrrrrry persuasive if some need convincing :D
  • Advertise on Facebook or Twitter
There are tons of pages and groups set out on Facebook and Twitter where local people can advertise things they have for sale. Finding local people to buy your hamsters is usually the most successful route and the simplest!
  • Privately owned pet shops
The big branded pet stores rarely ever accept baby hamsters. They have certified breeders who stock their shelves so wont accept masses of hamster babies from everyone who comes in the shop. The only pet shops that may possibly accept hamster babies will be privately owned store and even then its just a long-shot. Its worth ringing around your local area and seeing if they would take your hamsters in! Chances are they wont accept 10 hamsters babies and they probably wont even pay very well, if at all, for them but its an option to bear in mind.
  • (Country depending) GumTree
This is an online site where people can sell pretty much anything for free (eBay do not allow the sale of live pets so GumTree is an alternative to consider). You can set your price and add pictures and can attract local buyers to your pet. This is another outlet to consider if you are selling the offspring!
  • Local animal shelters
If you google your local pet rescue centre and give them a ring or a visit you may be able to donate your hamsters to them. I think out of politeness you should not ask for a price because these centres are up to their eyeballs anyway with homeless rodents and so they are actually doing you a favour taking any unwanted babies in. (However this is just personal opinion of course!)
I have mentioned this before but if you are selling your hamster online, make sure you price them above the cost of snake feed because there are people out there who buy living rodents to feed to their pet snakes. As long as your hamsters arent cheaper than specialised snake feed then you are doing all you can to prevent this kind of cruelty.

Any other suggestions on where to sell hamsters are welcome in the comments below! :D

  1. We have Gumtree here too, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about buying a giant cage off it and trying to save some of the rats that get put on there. The fact that there is always so many rats on there says to me people are being irresponsible. People don’t seem to have as much of a conscience giving up rodents to anyone (so many are free) who’ll take them as though they’re disposable like garbage. It upsets me.

I hope nobody breeds hamsters with the idea they will just give them up to a shelter, their resources are already stretched, what is the point of breeding if the resulting babies are sent to places were unwanted furries are sent?

I’m glad your previous post recommended having owners already sourced before breeding. It’s not a decision to be taken lightly is it x

  2. I didn’t realise they had gumtree in Australia! I’ll update this when I get a chance :P oh definitely they are last resort options. Hence it’s taking me so long to sort out eve and dexter, if I had my way there would be babies now! But my bf being the responsible one wants everything arranged and sorted before we do it because we don’t want our hamsters to be stressed and we don’t want any hamsters not to have decent homes and loving owners. We want dex and eve to be fulfilled. They may just be rodents but they’re living aren’t they?! :P
I was upset hearing that people feed living furries to feed to pets! Hamsters should never be bred for food – its cruel! Some people online just cant be trusted hence I’d rather sell to my friends and family waaaaay before someone I’d never had contact with before. Least this way I know they are going to awesome people :p

  3. Whee are glad to hear that you are finding homes first. Hamsters are not a huge commitment (ie. Not like a cat or dog) but so many end up in rescues. It is heartbreaking. Our Mummy thinks it might be an idea for you to say to potential buyers that if their situation changed you could take the hamster back. This means that they would never have the chance of becoming reptile food or ending up in a rescue. That is, of course, if you would have the space.

Whee look forward to seeing how the happy couple do!

    • This is of course offered. There isnt exactly lots of space for lots of babies to come back but thats when I start looking for a new buyer potentially and find them a new home. So its like a holiday camp whilst being with me – everyone likes holiday camps right!? :P Its really important for us to organise it well before doing because it would be so irresponsible of us to just let them have babies and then panic when we cant handle 8 hamster babies all in seperate cages ! If there was space for that – I would have to move myself out and let them rent the place ;)
Should hopefully be arranged so. I will keep everyone posted.. may even have to set a date ;D xxx

      • Fantastic idea that, perhaps you can add ‘blogger and breeder’ to your business cards now :)

        • YES! I am totally doing that! :D although, finding 5 people to buy our furture-baby hammys so far is tricky when they cant see the product… hmmm x

  6. Alexandra

This is really useful. I want to breed my hamster.

  7. I live in Mineral Wells, Texas. I would like to buy a hamster for my grown daughter. She had one when she was a little girl and named it Debbie. Debbie was almost black with yellowish coloring on her nose and feet. I do not know what breed she was but she was very sweet and tame and I want to get one. I would also like to buy a hamster for myself with a preference for an albino with white long fur. I had one years ago named Mitzi, she bit me sometimes as she had a temper. If she was out of her cage playing in her playpen, she did not want to go back in her cage and would bite me but other than that she was very cute and sweet. I would sit and watch her for hours on end and I would like to get one like her. Does anyone know where I can get hamsters like these? Nobody in Mineral Wells sells hamsters that I know of. If you do know where I can get them please call me at 940-659-2061.
